Pixel Game Maker MV Review

Pixel Game Maker MV lets you create a 2D game right from the start, with no game design knowledge required. Featuring a set of easy-to-follow tutorials and different ways to create your dream game, this game/program is one of the best tools for creating a game as an upcoming solo developer. Since this game was a development program or toolset, reviewing it was quite different from the usual process. Key elements such as graphics or story do not apply. However, it was still an enjoyable experience that taught many lessons along the way.

Tutorials

Tutorials are the very first thing players will interact with. Although tutorials in games and programs are often there to guide you, these tutorials show you step by step exactly what you need to do. Starting with creating a scene, the tutorials break down the areas of the user interface and their impact on the experience.

Each of these tutorials varies in terms of the time required to complete them. Creating a scene, for example, is much faster than creating long-range enemy attacks. The program does a great job of transitioning from one tutorial to another, easily guiding the player through the process of creating a simple game. I would highly recommend setting aside a few hours to complete all of the tutorials at once, as it would be easy to forget where you left off.

The only major issue I’ve had while following the tutorials is that they sometimes don’t work as expected. If the viewport is maximized, this causes the helper box to point to incorrect areas. There were also some elements of the game that didn’t go well despite following these tutorials correctly multiple times. Fixing the issues was pretty easy, but it was a shame that such issues were caused by the tutorials themselves.

The tools

The tools consist of six main areas. Resources, Tiles, Objects, Animation, Scenes and Transition. Resources allow the preparation and arrangement of image elements in the game. Tiles allow the management of objects used for the creation of the map, such as the floor and walls. Items allow characters and objects to have certain characteristics and traits. Animation is of course a place to manage animation. The scenes are the area for managing the different levels available in the game. The transition is the area that manages the connections between the different scenes.

All of these of course go to different levels of detail. Some areas are naturally more complicated than others. Scenes, for example, is a fairly easy area to use, as it only includes the level itself, while Objects or Animation have an incredibly large amount of options throughout the game.

Using and understanding all of these options would require many hours of play, as the tutorials don’t cover absolutely everything there is to know. Pixel Game Maker MV is a learning tool for this reason, as each individual will learn and progress with the tools at their own pace.

Broaden your vision

Pixel Game Maker MV supports single and multiplayer creation. The game prides itself on having 4-player support right out of the box, with no additional programming or plugins required. This 4-player support can be for both competitive and cooperative local play.

Just because you don’t need plugins doesn’t mean you can’t use them. Pixel Game Maker MV supports JavaScript, which means you can create plugins and perform actions that you might not be able to do in the game’s visual scripting system.

Visuals and graphics are not limited by presets. The program also has a graphics import function that allows you to shape the look of the games as you wish. You can also modify this through particle effects, the physics engine, and the multiplayer layer combining feature. All of these features truly allow the game to be your own creation.

Summary

This program allows new and experienced game developers to easily create a 2D game of their choice. Creating original platformers or action games without game design knowledge has never been easier. The software plans to allow users to launch their creations on Nintendo Switch via the Nintendo eShop in 2020.

KADOKAWA is currently organizing a Pixel Game Maker MV Game Development Challenge, in which they will search for the best creations to launch on Nintendo Switch. The competition will run from October 3, 2019 to March 31, 2020. This is absolute proof that using this program can get you into the industry and get you a good portfolio, if you are willing to go for it. spend time.

After putting a decent amount of hours into this game, I’d say it was an easy to understand experience that taught me new lessons about 2D game design. Having created my own 2D games before, this ease of use was a breath of fresh air compared to industrial level programs. With creating games as a selling point, I would say this program ticks all the boxes. I really enjoyed my time using this program.
